Basic Function and Principles:
Manages the process of performing engineering duties related to planning and designing the required heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration mechanical systems and selecting the type and size of equipment and/or components (including but not limited to: compressed air and medical gas system, centralized heat, cooling gas, water, steam and fuel systems) taking into consideration the principles of design, thermodynamics, heat transfer, hydraulics and fluid mechanics and material properties to ensure that mechanical systems and their devices will function safely, efficiently, economically and in line with the agreed upon design criteria, project/client cost requirements, specifications and international industry codes.
Roles and Responsibilities
Financial
- Manages performing the required design within the allocated budgeted hours (as per agreed upon project plan).
- Manages performing the required design tasks with the lowest number of errors (as per internal and external customers’ requirements) with a minimum wastage of time for reworks.
Customer
- Manages and maintains effective relationships with the internal and external customers, consultants, contractors and subcontractors and any other involved parties on the project.
- Manages carrying out necessary value engineering analysis and provide assurance to the client that their technical and budgetary requirements are respected in the design.
Internal Process
- Participates in implementing and transforming policies, goals and plans into medium and short-term plans to ensure internal work development and productivity increase.
- Participates in the development of the division's/ department's work plan; distributing and following-up on work activities, projects and programs, monitoring work flow and reviewing work methods and procedures.
- Suggests plans and programs that strive to boost the effectiveness of the department.
- Conducts periodic meetings with subordinates to ensure that priorities are clear and actions are running smoothly.
- Prepares cooling and heating load calculation using HAP, Elite, HEVAcom or any other industry recommended software.
- Determines the size of HVAC ducting, and preparation of ducting layout and conducts friction loss calculation of duct work.
- Determines the size of water and chilled water piping, preparation of piping layout and conduct pump head calculations for the chilled water piping.
- Prepares the control system layout and sequence of operation, equipment schedules.
- Reviews of suppliers’ documents and liaise with suppliers for technical inputs and inquiries.
- Performs all mechanical designs and construction drawings including central HVAC drawings for the projects and advise necessary notes and recommendations.
- Maintains and stores project records, data and documents.
- Ensures progress monitoring and early problem prevention through analyzing situations and problems accurately, identify and weigh the probable effects of alternative solutions and implement effective courses of action.
- Prepares periodic reports with respect to the division's/ department's activities and achievements to be submitted to the Senior Project Lead Engineer.
- Specifies manpower requirements according to recruitment and selection and human resources planning practices.
- Participates in determining training needs of subordinates and evaluating the outcomes of training courses in coordination with the concerned human resources personnel.
- Follows-up employee affairs including vacations, leaves
etc.
- Conducts performance appraisals for subordinates according to scheduled plans and recommending necessary actions as per the applied practices.
- Conducts any other job-related tasks or duties as assigned by the Senior Project Lead Mechanical HVAC Engineer.
